Downtime & Changes
Hey everyone.
I want to apologize for some of the downtime in the past few weeks. Some of it was under our control, some wasn't. First off - it's been a quiet summer this year for the park. Which is a good thing, don't get me wrong! But it doesn't give a lot of news to post about. Second, I personally just moved out to Pennsylvania, so I haven't been around too much. And the other members of the team are getting ready to go back to college. So we will try to keep things updated through Fright Fest, and you guys can expect some exciting changes for this site during the off-season! Six Flags Tv Ads Get Thumbs Down From Some Asian Americans
QUOTE(Megan Stride | amNewYork) More Flags, More Fun" may mean "More Outrage" for Six Flags over the amusement park chain's summer ad campaign featuring a screaming, thickly-accented young Asian man. The commercials, which have been airing nationally for months, are being called offensive, or worse, racist. "It's a pretty offensive ad, not only because of the thick accent, but also because someone is screaming at you," said Margaret Fung, executive director of New York's Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. "I can't believe that the company thinks this is effective." The organization will be contacting other activist groups as it considers taking action against Six Flags, Fung said. The organization has received several e-mail complaints about the ads, she added. "There are groups in the past who have joined together in coalitions," Fung said. "We need to speak to our other groups in the Asian American communities to see if there's an interest in starting a campaign against it." Six Flags did not respond to repeated requests for comment. The campaign seems to be a riff on Japanese game shows or commercials featuring pop-up, hyper salesmen. "How often have we seen this type of satire? LOTS. Now Six Flags is taking this ignorance nationwide," writes blogger Angry Chinese Guy. The commercials are certainly obnoxious, but not racist, said Democratic City Councilman John Liu, who represents Flushing, a neighborhood with a large Asian population. "I'm frankly annoyed by it," Liu said. "It's more than a bit annoying. But I'm not sure if I see a racist component in it. I haven't received any complaints about it." But Aimee Baldillo, the director of programs at the Asian American Justice Center in Washington, D.C., said that the thick accent makes the caricature unmistakable. "It's always that fallback of the stereotype of the perpetual foreigner," Baldillo said. "There's still very much that image of them [Asian Americans] as foreign and still not belonging to this country." The center often deals with poor media portrayals of Asian Americans by sitting down with producers to explain what's offensive and how to be more sensitive. "This is a highlight of why it's important to have diverse people in decision-making in companies and advertising," Baldillo said. "I think it speaks to the need for diversity in advertising and for some sort of interest in cultural sensitivity." Both Baldillo and Fung said that while portrayals of Asian Americans such as this are unacceptable, they are certainly not uncommon. "Unfortunately, there are very many examples of these kinds of racist portrayals," Fung said. Bob Garfield, ad critic for Advertising Age and co-host of NPR's "On the Media," said that while the ads carried no blatant racism, they lack sensitivity. "I don't see this as stereotyping because it really doesn't conform to common stereotypes of Asians. A common stereotype would be 'inscrutable' or 'good in math,'" Garfield said. "That said, nobody wants to see his racial or ethnic characteristics turned into a cartoon. Nobody wants to be Amos 'n' Andy." People these days need to stop with being offended by everything. They didn't do it to be racist. hey did it because it catches attention. This whole thing is stupid and people should live on with their lives. Army Simulator At The Park
Apparently starting today there will be an army simulator at the park that everyone can use! Here is the information:
QUOTE Beginning today visitors to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey will have a chance to play at war in a whole new way, with the U.S. Army's Virtual Army Experience. The high-tech team-based simulation game gives participants the opportunity to see what its like to be in the various operational roles of soldiers in the modern day. This includes a variety of activities including learning teamwork, rules of engagement, leadership and how to use today's high-tech equipment. And as part of the experience participants will even get to play the America's Army PC game against real U.S. soldiers. The 20-minute experience includes HMMWV simulators modeled on vehicles employed by the Special Forces, and even a Black Hawk simulator where participants must work as a team to defeat a virtual enemy. Of course all this is hardly a substitute for basic training, let alone advanced war college training, but visitors will be debriefed on their performance and told how they could improve. So if you want to see if you could make it in the field, the U.S. Army's Virtual Experience is being offered free of charge at Six Flags from August 1-10. Source New Zoning Rules For Sfne
After the issues with getting The Dark Knight coaster built at Six Flags New England there has been a lot of tension between the park and the township of Agawam, MA. It's come to the point where some officials fear that Six Flags might try to leave the area.
What's at issue is the fact that the park currently needs special permits (which can get held up for a long time) to build anything over 45ft tall. Which, at an amusement park like SFNE, is basically everything. Officials are now considering raising the height restrictions to 200ft, something that would help the park out greatly. You can read all about it here. Fire Destroys Haunted House At Sfa
A fire broke out at a Haunted House in Six Flags America yesterday. Luckily no one was hurt and the attraction is apparently only used during Fright Fest. But the park was evacuated briefly while the fire was occurring. You can read all about it here.
A Park Update!
Hey guys! Jglonek and myself decided to take a trip out to the park this past week because I had received a new battery for my camera and also I had never seen the Glow in the Park Parade yet. It was very moderate crowds for going to the park at around 6 PM, but definitely not the worst I had ever seen.
Upon walking into the park these days, you are greeted by lovely signs stating that the Glow in the Park parade is now nightly so you now have the opportunity to experience this fabulous parade, if I may say so. We will get to more on the parade later. Also above the ticket booths are the colorful banners displaying the promotions of the Flash Pass as well as the new promotion, the Big Six Pass. Hit the link for some more information but in short, its six visits for the price of one. We unfortunately missed the Jeep "Go Anywhere, Do Anything Tour", which can be seen on GAHistory's website, but the signs were still up so maybe it ran earlier in the day and they shut it down when it was time for dinner? Some new things I spotted, granted I have been to the park in a month or two with trips to California and work, were alot, if not all, the basketball games now have a Modell's sponsorship plastered to the top of the stand. I guess with you stock at $0.80 a share, you need all the sponsorships you can get. Moving forward, if you guys remember back in late April when we first reported to you about cabana rentals, you can now see they have modified to old entrance to Old Country and Spinmeister to be known as Cabana Cove. As far as I can see, they have tents that can be bought at Target and is completely closed off from the rest of the park. I guess me and the other Insider guys are gonna have to pitch in one day and rent one of these things. Definitely looks like a good way to beat the heat, if you are willing to spare the change. So to conclude this update, lets close out with a few things we also spotted while visiting:
Tickets Back In Lines?
Screamscape is reporting that they have heard people in line for the major coasters are [again] being given tickets when entering the line that they need to give in at the end of the gate or else they can't get on the ride. A way to help line cutting, as it were. Screamscape is reporting this as something new but we know the park has tried it two or three times in the past.
However, overlord and I were at the park last Tuesday (granted, it was 7pm) and we didn't see anything like that happening. Has anyone else? And we do have pictures from that park trip, if overlord ever puts them up! Bigsix Pass Now Available!
Six Flags has come out with a new BigSix pass, which is available for purchase online and at Great Adventure. This pass is the same price as a one-day season pass, and is good for six visits to the park until the end of the season! Sounds like a great deal to me for those who don't have a season pass!
You can buy them online here, and more information is below: QUOTE Big Six Pass $49.99 — THE PRICE OF A ONE-DAY ADMISSION Now you can visit Six Flags Great Adventure six times for just $49.99 — the price of a one-day admission ticket! Use your Big Six Pass to return for concerts, special events and Fright Fest. Visit on six regular operating days through November 2. Please note the Big Six Pass doesn't include all of the perks of a Season Pass such as a Value Book, tickets for friends or visits to other Six Flags theme parks. But with six visits for $49.99 — it's a great deal. Buy a day, get SIX visits! Markings For 2009 Hurricane Harbor Expansion?
Screamscape is reporting that somewhere in Hurricane Harbor there are orange markings on trees, which are probably designated as trees to be removed for whatever we might be getting in 2009.
Does anyone have more information or a location in the park where this is happening? We'd love to hear! After A Terrible Plunge Into Almost Being Delisted From Stock Exchange
After dropping below the 1.10 margin in the past week frightening investors the Six Flags stock has begun to rise again. Some blame reasons for the sudden drop on the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia last week and a continually worsening economy. However it looks as if it is correcting itself and time will tell. Lets all hope for the best.
